Workshop Outline:
Working with teenagers can be rewarding and complicated. The music is great, but there is so much of it. The young people are clever and insightful, but they don't necessarily let you know that. The needs people have can be addressed in music therapy because they are strongly connected to emotions and don't necessarily benefit from words. There is so much potential and so much resistance all at once. This workshop will focus on musical and interpersonal strategies for working successfully with young people. Led by the leading international expert on this topic, Professor Kat McFerran, there will be opportunities to work with pop styles including beat-based music, American inspired Hip-Hop, ballads, and other popular styles. We will play with how to engage young people in ways that empower them to express themselves in ways that bring relief and pride in their identity. The workshop will be interactive and build upon the existing skills of music therapists in Hong Kong.
